Complete Urdu Keyboard Installation & Typing Guide

To start typing in Urdu script on your computer or mobile device, you do not need to purchase any physical keyboards or download sketchy third-party applications. Modern operating systems (Windows, macOS, Android, iOS) come equipped with pre-loaded native Urdu keyboard layouts. This guide will walk you through enabling the keyboard step-by-step and teaching you how to use it.

Interactive Phonetic Urdu Keyboard Layout

The Phonetic Layout is the most popular layout for Urdu keyboard typing because it links Urdu letters to English letters with similar sounds (e.g., the letter A maps to ا (Alif), and B maps to ب (Bey)). Look at the visual layout below:

Difference Between Urdu Phonetic Keyboard & Roman Urdu

It is important not to confuse Urdu Keyboard Typing with Roman Urdu. Roman Urdu is the practice of writing Urdu words using the standard English alphabet (e.g., writing "Kya haal hai" instead of "کیا حال ہے"). While Roman Urdu is common in casual chatting, standard official document entry, journalism, books, and court files require the actual Urdu Nastaliq text typed using the Urdu script layout. Learning the phonetic keyboard allows you to bridge the gap effortlessly.
